Kevin Meng, student from MIT and the 1st prize winner of HackMIT, will organize and lead the workshops on the first of the Hackthon. Student will have 24 hours to complete their Hackathon challenge.

Hackathon Challenge:

Autonomy of Thought - Tacking Misinformation and Online Echo Chambers

  •  "Autonomy of Thought" refers to the ability to think independently without being subjected to manipulation due to modern news and media.
  • Online echo chambers amplify and reinforce certain beliefs by repetitive communication in a closed system without contradiction, often due to algorithms employed by different media platform.
  • Misinformation is false information spread not necessarily with dishonest intentions.

MIT App Inventor Bootcamp

This is entry-level computer programming bootcamp. No prior programming experiences is required. We will use the MIT App Inventor platform to learn how to build a real mobile App on Android phone. The daily bootcamp contains 2-hrs lectures and 1-hr instructor-lead group discussion.

Hackathon and MIT App Inventor

Guest Speaker: Dr. Yu Meng

Dr. Meng holds a Ph.D in Computer Science and MS in Electrical Engineering, IEEE senior member. Dr. Meng is an experienced and passionate educator who seeks to train middle and high school students to innovate with STEM. His students has won dozens of top awards at the most prestigious national and international science competitions, including ISEF,STS, ACM Cutler-ell Prize, Davidson Fellowship, and HackMIT.

In the Seminar, Dr. Meng introduced:

1. What is Hackathon?

2. How to create a winning Hackathon project?

3. Why MIT App Inventor is a great development and deployment environment for Hackathon.


Many students have expressed the interest to joining the 4th San Ramon Hackathon and learn to build a mobile app with MIT App Inventor.  Some parents have commented that even them have learned something from Dr. Meng's seminar.

Mr. Jingming Li is Founder and CEO of TrovaPage.com and former CTO of Alipay.

Event

Mr. Jingming Li shared his journey from Silicon Valley software engineer to become Alipay's CTO, then returned back to Bay Area again and started his own company TrovaPage.com. During the years with Alipay, he worked directly reporting to Mr. Jack Ma,  the CEO of Ablibaba Group and built the innovative  global payment system. There is over 150+ students and parents joined the zoom seminar. Students have asked Mr. Li many interesting questions: such as what's the skills are needed to become CTO? What's his biggest challenges working with Jack Ma? Does Alipay and PayPal have similar technology? Some students even want to get Mr. Li's opinion on  if people should hold or sell the Alibaba's stock. It was an very inspiring session.

Dr. Sherry Hu shared her point of view as city council  with tri-valley students on how  we can better serve our community with technology?  She also discussed her point of view as Beyond Academy founder on what are valuable extracurricular activities for high school students?
